Personally I recommend Sony Vegas, it's a great editor.

Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere Elements have great reviews. They sound just what you're after; take your pick.

I would go with Adobe Premiere, that is the most professional in my opinion. Going to cost you a bit though.

Adobe Premiere has a wide range of effects. For more advanced effects, also get Adobe aftereffects. Many professional film companies use it. (it is also used on many TV shows)

The main thing that sets theme programs apart from the competition is the ease of use when it comes to advanced things. They keep a photoshop style work flow which makes complex tasks, very simple compared to other video editors. Only problem is hat many adobe programs lack a wide range of output formats, (they have many popular formats but not many that are suited for web stream so you may end up exporting raw video and using a 3rd party converter to get the video into the format that you want.

I have a huge problem with Adobe software. It's just a little... bloated. Though I do use Photoshop if I have to, I've never liked Premiere Pro. I'm a loyal Sony Vegas user and it is by far my favorite video editing software. Unfortunately it doesn't run natively in Mac OS 10, however Parallels fixes that real easy. It's got tons of features and it's by far the easiest professional piece of software to use. Final Cut was a night mare... I bought FCE and don't even use it- but then again that's for Mac OS 10. For Windows I'd say go with Vegas, you won't be disappointed. I've used if for years and would never let it go.

older versions of Adobe Premiere Pro were a nightmare to use, the UI was just so unorganized and cluttered. they eventually fix it with the CS 3 and 4

If you want full-on professional software, go the way of something like Avid or VT. Avid is the industry standard for Windows based nonlinear editing. VT, or as it use to be known as VideoToaster, is a secondary standard mostly used for broadcast television.. though they have a full suite of tools for nonlinear editing. Both Avid and VT are real time based products, in other words.. no rendering.. no wait times.. it's all live.

If you're looking for a cheaper solution, Adobe Premiere Pro would be a good option. It's on par between Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro on the Mac side. It's fairly good for the price, but not necessarily the best in the business. Sony Vegas is another option, Vegas began as a audio based editor and eventually became a full nonlinear video based product. It's an interesting program, and not to bad for the price.

Here's the listed pricing, however you can normally find discounted prices on all of it just like when you shop for a car:

  1. Avid, Media Composer: $2500 for software, $10,000 with software plus real time processing hardware.
  2. VT 5, $5000. SpeedEdit (real time editing software) by itself is $500.
  3. Adobe Premiere Pro, $770
  4. Vegas Pro, $500.
