I am a college student and a own a brand new 13" macbook pro. I would like to install Windows 7 on a bootcamp partition. Microsoft offers a deal to students where they can upgrade to Windows 7 for $29.99. I an not upgrading but I would like to get the student pricing. Will the upgrade work on bootcamp? Has anyone successfully done this?

I don't think it will. But if you have a Windows XP license you can install XP and then upgrade. I'm pretty sure you can get an XP license from a friend or something. Vista will work too.

Call the Microsoft store at 1-877-696-7786 and tell them you're situation and that you want the full version for a student discount. That's what I did and they gave me Windows 7 Professional for only $65.

No you can not buy the upgrade, because you don't have any version of windows on your mac to upgrade yet.

EDIT:
Here is a link to a website with usually discounted deals although Windows 7 doesn't seem to be discounted: journeyed.com
Also, if you go through this link & choose your school you might be able to save more, I've found if you go through this link sometimes thinks are extremely cheap: http://www.journeyed.com/select

Technically it should work. It is not legal though unless you install an earlier version windows first

Why would you want to run Windows on Mac? It makes no sense? At least not to me anyway.

Usually to run Windows only programs or if you are a developer it would be nice to have Windows also.

Ah right ok. I thought it was just for the sake of it.

It offers flexibility, especially in a college setting where some of the software you may need to run only works on one platform (often, Windows.)

Hmm I suppose. I'm getting a MacBookPro for my college course soon enough. But I will always have my Windows computer and laptops very close by.

Sometimes, for portability, it makes sense to dual-boot a MBP. I can't carry two laptops with me everywhere I go, and I need access to Windows to help me do repairs to other laptops I work on. It's a Window's world out there. Can't live with it, can't live without it. Dual-boot and get the best of both worlds.
