Okay..I dont like oatmeal at all. I read somewhere that it may be because i am so used to sweeter foods. The thing is...i have never been a regular GOOD breakfast eater(i dont count poptarts as breakfast anymore) so how can i make oatmeal taste good.(without adding fruit at all)

Well.. if you want something that taste good over being healthy: Try different flavors such as, a bit a butter + a few dash of salt (to taste), and brown sugar. That's one of my favorites. Add a bit of cinnamon, and if you want, a drop of vanilla to give it a nice cinnamon roll flavor.

Salt is crucial to amplify the flavor, so you normally always want to add some to the oatmeal. I'm not sure why you want to omit fruit? that's the best thing to add in oatmeal, especially blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries,

Edit:
For good true oatmeal, don't microwave it. Get real oatmeal and water and heat / simmer it in a pot while continually stirring.

well..it has to be healthy too...would substituting the water for skim milk work?

(Sep 11 '10 at 16:15) SJP SJP's gravatar image

ill try cooking it on the stove..i was using the microwave

Yes, in fact I prefer using milk/milk-like products over water myself. It gives it a nice creamy texture and just tastes better. I haven't tried skim milk, just 2% / fat-free and rice milk.

okay..ill try milk..i only drink skim milk..and do the cooking instructions change if im using milk?

(Sep 11 '10 at 16:22) SJP SJP's gravatar image

It's basically the same, just substitute a fraction of the water with milk. It really comes down to how much water is present in the milk already, as you don't want all of the liquid to evaporate away, as you need it to soften the oats. With 2% milk I tend to add 1/4 as much water and the rest of the 3/4s as milk.

okay....ill will try that. how much salt should i use?

(Sep 11 '10 at 16:35) SJP SJP's gravatar image

That's really up to you and is based on a person's own tastes. I tend to like about a 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon per cup of oats.

If you want a healthy breakfast, try boiling like a dozen eggs at the beginning of the week then put them in the fridge. Then just eat 2 in the morning when you first wake up, it saves time and they taste pretty good with a sprinkle of salt.

How to make a thick and creamy non dairy chocolate oatmeal shake with just a few low cost ingredients. Note: I'm NOT a 'Soy Milk' fan. It tastes funny, and possibly has bad effects on males. {Search my LockerGnome.net posts}. I switch the flavor of the Oatmeal Shakes from Chocolate, Vanilla, Blueberry, etc.

Honey... mix it with a big spoon of honey.

Its funny, at first i hated the stuff... but I liked the concept of having this abundant low GI slop available.

So i pushed on and kept eating - untill now, the thought of it makes me hungry. Its awesome stuff.

Its become my utilitarian food - something I eat when i don't want to be bothered with hunger. Plus, it makes you feel like your eating that slop they eat in the Matrix... Oo...

Akkkkk Salt! I use skim milk and just nuke it for one minute to just take the cold off. I dump a blend of dried antioxidant dried fruit. I can't image why you don't want fruit on it. I keep it in a container and just shake some on before nuking .I add sunflower seeds also. I have it daily. Yum.

How about any combination of cut up fresh fruit like strawberries, oranges, apples, bananas, peaches, blueberries, pears, raisins, chopped dried apricots, dried cranberries work well and adding a little cinnamon to your taste preference.

I even had some friends who add in different types of fruit juices or different types of apple-sauces to their oatmeal.
