A lot of smaller, developing countries depend on this technology as a big part of their internet infrastructure, since it's easy to cover a small country in 3G coverage and provide for a larger area that way, along with voice reception as well...

Beautiful, but far less reliable technology. Performance is usually pretty weak, also. Normally well under 2Mbps, with rather high latency.

The title 3G simply refers to the network being the "Third Generation" of mobile wireless technology. The main benefits of a 3G network as opposed to a 2G, or edge network, is the ability to use both data and speech services simultaneously, as well as dramatically improved data transfer speeds.

Edge is actually 3G, and placed under the ITU 3G definition, but most refer to it as 2.5G.
