The title 3G simply refers to the network being the "Third Generation" of mobile wireless technology. The main benefits of a 3G network as opposed to a 2G, or edge network, is the ability to use both data and speech services simultaneously, as well as dramatically improved data transfer speeds. |

Go figure. I was just about to post this very same question
A lot of smaller, developing countries depend on this technology as a big part of their internet infrastructure, since it's easy to cover a small country in 3G coverage and provide for a larger area that way, along with voice reception as well...
Beautiful, but far less reliable technology. Performance is usually pretty weak, also. Normally well under 2Mbps, with rather high latency.
