When people are around me I get hot and frustrated and I tend to mess things up and not think clearly.

But when people drop off the computer at my house I can work better because I'm on my own, so I feel relaxed.

It doesn't matter who it is I just don't like when people are around, I panic. =/

Is this normal?

Sure is, it's just a complex really that you think you are going to fail because people are watching you. But it's all in your head, you need to either forget about them or talk them through what you are doing so that they can see and understand that you are working and what you are doing.

It's also easier to fix things on your own because if you make a little mistake then there is no one to see it and you can pretend that it never happened.

I agree on your last point, the number of times I've made mistakes outnumbers infinity

I've been fixing computers for years and I still get a little anxious when I'm at the clients home working on their computer. I find if I talk with the client and can make them feel a little comfortable by using a little wit, it makes things flow a bit better and I feel more relaxed while working.

Yes explaining what you're doing can help, but in most cases actually confuses the client. If you make a mistake, explain that this is probably how the problem happened in the first place, then the client may learn from the experience.

Just remember, you are the professional, so allow yourself to be the professional. The client is usually just curious as to how something could go wrong, and it's up to you to put their worries at ease by explaining in laymans terms(Dummy speak) how this can be fixed.

It is distracting to have people watching over your shoulder, but you can explain politely that you can focus better if you're left to your own devices. If you can't dispose of them, try making conversation instead. Most of the time they're just curious, looking to pick up some pointers on what went wrong so they won't have to call you next time around. If they get aggressive or offensive, remind them who is dependent on who and remind yourself that you never need money bad enough to take crap from some tool who hosed his machine downloading porn. Also remember that, if you charge by the hour, ultimately they're putting money in your pocket.

Start off on the right foot. Tell them if they want you to repair their pc to bring it to your location and drop it off. If they think they can hang around explain that you have 5 machines ahead of his and you really don't have time to chat. If they don't like it tell them to put'er back in the car. Because he will have to find another service provider........ Unless it is a REALLY GREAT lookin lady, in that case forget everything I just said & pull her up a chair!!!!!!
