Hey,

I've got a big problem with my current school. Its in The Netherlands in Amsterdam. The name of the school is Media College Amsterdam.

For the past 4 weeks I've learned only the basics of HTML&CSS other than that it's been a big BIG waste of time. The teachers don't show up or are either to late! And when we are to late we aren't allowed in to class?!?!?! WTF Also this is a study toward Game-Development and the only time per week that we are using any code is during the two hours of HTML&CSS.

What should I do? switch to a other school or just hang in there? I am already about 8 years into development. And I am learning absolutely nothing here!

This study is four years long and I really think I'll die of being bored to DEATH! Right now I get home exhausted of doing NOTHING!

If you know of any Game-Development study in The Netherlands(yeah I know this is a United States website) than please tell me!

And by the way, This school was rated the WORST school in The Netherlands of 2009!

Most of what we learn in college is useless to what we will do in life but we need to go into a ton of debt in order to get that sheet of paper that says we went to college.

The entire educational system is flawed as almost no part of it is tailored to the students career goals. so for example if your job, for example if you want to teach a junior high school student math, you have to take 4 years of advanced college level math, just to teach a student basic math.

Also the colleges goal is not to teach you, it is extract as much money from you as possible while having you learn something along the way.

Teachers are also able to take advantage of students because they are not held accountable for their actions in a way that students are, It is kinda like on the recent news report in which a police officer who was texting while driving, crashed into another car, killing 2 people and severely injuring 2 other people, the family loses their 2 kids while the police offer gets 2 years paid suspension.

A professor can come early and mark students late who actually came on time (one of my professors does that and it is nearly impossible to complain to anyone in charge and the students that try, end up failing as the professor will really go after them)

For example when I had biology, the professor would do things like come in early and mark on time students late, He would give in class assignments and at a random time announce that he will be leaving early and will mark anyone who doesn't hand in the work before he leaves as having 0 points for the assignment. He would come in late (sometimes up to 20 minutes late for a 50 minute class then give us a exam that has like 50 multiple choice and 12 short answer (by the time everything is handed out, another 10 minutes is wasted and everyone is forced to rush. It was hurting our grades so me and a few other students scheduled a meeting with the department head to discuss what was happening. The department head did nothing about it and I think he alerted the teacher about it and after that, it became very hard to get a good score on assignments. He would find things little things and take a lot of points off. In the college, I had a history of getting an A to an A+ on my essays, with that teacher, I couldn't get above a C but before complaining I was at least getting a B+ to an A., after me and every other student who complained, got an F, we tried to report the issue to the president of the college, couldn't get a meeting with them, if ht was the second semester of the year, I would have taken them to small claims court.

I disagree about it not being tailored to career goals, but it really depends where you go and what course you do I guess. Obviously there's plenty of hands-on specialist degrees, and many where you can choose a lot of the modules yourself. I'm big on higher education.

And it sucks that you had such a corrupt professor. At my university, each assignment gets marked by several people from the exam board and then gets averaged out, and it's anonymous from both ends too, so nobody knows who is marking what, and the markers don't know whose work they're marking - in other words, it's completely anonymous.

I think the best solution would be to talk to someone at the school and tell them that you are finding it too easy. Have you joined the wrong type of class? Are there and more difficult ones that you could do instead?I think you need to try and talk to someone before you consider leaving or anything like that. How long have you been at school? you never know, it might get harder. I am taking IT GCSE at high school and that is so easy, we are in the hardware topics at the moment, and while most people struggle to recognize and Ethernet port, I have already built 3 or 4 computers, fixed over 25 and taken apart for scrap about 40, so I know what the parts are, but I am assuring my self that it will get harder.

Most of IT in High School I'm afraid is using Microsoft Office.

I've talked to the teachers but they are only willing to talk about this subject until the first 6 months are over. That is the time they need to take to evaluate us. Know what we can do and stuff like that. The biggest problem is that the school decided to but IV (Interactive Visualization) and MT(Media Technology) on the same path (focused mostly to the IV side) for the first six months. One teacher that does understand the students problems says that only in the 2-3 year you'll be doing something. Plus if teachers are not showing up or showing up late than what am I supposed to do? Take it? Well they don't if I get late. And I've been to this school for only 4 weeks. What I've done in those four weeks could easily be done in just one week.

then i would stick it out, do you know anyone who has been to the school before? does it have good reports? Try talking to someone higher up than the teachers and about the late thing, I would go to the school governors? are you paying for your education? and you are missing lots of it because the teachers are late

Yeah here in PR we have the same problem and since 1st grade :) even in private schools teachers show late to class. Even in my current Univ. and is considered the best in Latin America. At least you have learned some cool stuff, I have only learned from kinder Spanish, English. Science and Math :/, If you can find another school well change if that makes you feel better :)

we don't have it too bad in the UK, but there is every so ofter a teacher that is ill and the class is forgotten and we go 80% through the lesson waiting before someone turns up, but that is rare

(Sep 23 '10 at 05:32) Tim Fontana Tim%20Fontana's gravatar image

we have teachers that are substitutes to the ones that don't come, but no student enters, they decide to stay outside the school lol

(Sep 23 '10 at 05:34) Patxi Patxi's gravatar image

oh, we have subs, but they sometimes forget

(Sep 23 '10 at 05:35) Tim Fontana Tim%20Fontana's gravatar image

Our subs always forget to go to the class!

(Sep 23 '10 at 08:13) zezioen zezioen's gravatar image

As a sub...I am always there at least 1/2 hour early in the morning and will wait for all of the students to leave at the end of the period/day. I've been told that I am more accessible than many of their teachers.

Always check the program structure. I checked mine before I started my degree so that I knew exactly what I'd be studying.

Talk to someone in the school, and tell him/her what you think. It's extremely important that you feel comfortable in your school otherwise you're not going to learn as you supposed to.
