I hate when people see Android phones and call them "Droids"! This gets really annoying! These people are usually teens (most teens have Verizon) and they are completely clueless that the world of Android has been around for almost 2 years before there was any word of the Droid. It's kind Verizon is claiming Android as their's with their new ad campaign. UGGGGH you don't understand how much this irritates me as an AT&T user. It's like I can talk about an Android phone and then when they hear the word "Android", they correct me by saying "Droid" and then I have to do this whole discussion with them and they don't get it and they continue to be their ignorant selves. Sorry for ranting, but I really had to get this out. Any opinions on this topic?

Just say "Droid is a phone, Android is an operating system" and just move on.
Technically Android is not a phone, just like iOS is not a phone. They are operating systems put on phones like the Droid, Droid 2, HTC Evo, etc. (and the iPhone for iOS)

You said int he title "Android phone" so you'd be wrong too. This correction thing works both ways ;)

well it's kind of a short way for saying "phone that runs android"

All Android phones are not called droids, only certain Verizon models, such as the HTC Droid Eris, HTC Droid Incredible, Motorola Droid, Motorola Droid 2, etc. But other phones have other names such as the Nexus One, Galaxy S, HTC Evo, etc. So if someone calls ALL android devices droids, they are wrong.

I've only heard the term Droid as short for Android being used after the Droid was released

Actually, Droid is trademarked by LucasFilm. Ol' George was pretty smart doing that. Big V licensed it. At a pretty hefty price I imagine. Not sure why HTC doesn't show the same disclaimer with their Droid-branded phone.

It's because Verizon's marketing department did a great job getting the Lucasfilm Ltd trade marked name out there as their brand of Android based phones. So now when the general populous thinks of Android based phones, they think of the Droid line of phones by Verizon.
