Here is a link that'll tell you all about WANs, Mr. 21-year-old no-can-Google. Please don't ask questions that have answers so easily located. It only serves to publish redundant information.

Stop being such a dick, Seb. From the FAQ:

Please avoid asking questions that are not relevant to this community, too subjective and argumentative.

It says nothing about not asking questions that have "easily located" answers.

A WAN is a communication network that uses existing technology to connect local computer networks into a larger working network that may cover other local or out of area locations.

I consider a WAN to be any network that connects two or more LANs...which pretty much describes the internet, although you can have several LANs connected and still not have access to the internet.

a wide area network, i think is the whole internet. or maybe, if thats not the case then it is a series of remote places linked in a network

Connected LAN's. For example a company may want their offices in a state connected (not through the internet, which is an insecure medium) with their offices in another state, so they pay for a leased line (very expensive). The alternative is setting up VPN's and doing it through the internet.

Connection to ISP's could also be considered as WAN technology (layer 2 protocols like PPP).
