I have an old one that was passed down to me. It's nice to pull it out of it's case and remember where we came from. The keys are hard to punch and it's loud as hell, but it brings a smile to my face when I think of how frustratingly loud my computer keyboard can get.

My parents have several very old manual typewriters, but the last time I actually used a typewriter myself was sophomore year of high school (1990.) I was already doing my schoolwork (reports and such) on a personal computer with a word processor, but I was known for my fast typing so I often ended up helping friends type up their reports at the last minute in the library. I hated using a typewriter after having grown proficient on a computer. White Out sucks... so does ensuring the paper is aligned properly and the margins are properly set.

EDIT: Actually, the typewriter in high school was an electric. My parents have the manual ones where you have to manually advance it at the end of the line.

My school has one in the office that never gets used they just have it for looks. I think it is pretty cool.

I think the main reason why anyone would bother to REALLY use typewriters for productivity nowadays is because they know they're gonna be distracted by everything on the web and on their computers while they're typing. (How many times have you failed to resist the urge to click on your Twitter/Facebook bookmark while typing that report which was due the next day?)

So I guess it'd actually be pretty cool if some company actually produced a pseudo-laptop device which is only capable of word processing, where its hardware is optimized for typing, printing and data transfer only. (YES, THAT MEANS NO MINESWEEPER)

The last time I touched a typewriter was 5 years ago at my friend's house.

Dang, if I ever find one for sale around here, I'd buy it without second thought.

Of course people do. They just mod them to work with their computers through the USB port, now.
