Hi Guys,

I have just been given a laptop with windows XP pro, I have a problem. The laptop was an old friends work laptop, and all access has been blocked, when I mean all access, I mean you cannot view set files, use run or cmd and download things, also can't get into bios, is there anyway you know of apart from putting new hard drive in or reinstalling windows, that i could set myself as admin and open up the whole laptop ?

your answer will be much needed.

Indeed there is a way to recover lost passwords! :D Just make a live CD of this OS, and boot from it. Ophcrack

This is merely for educational purposes and nothing malicious.

I find that this program does not work all the time.

I found one that just clears the password but i cant remember what it is called, it is the best i have ever seen.

It sounds like the laptop is locked out by the BIOS password, if you can tell me the brand there may be some back-door path for emergency needs, but until that case http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000235.htm

it is a bios lock and he said he is locked out of admin account

(Sep 29 '10 at 20:38) kevin ♦♦ kevin's gravatar image

does windows start... if so it is NOT a bios lock... reinstall windows and all should be good... if windows does not start than it is a bios lock, there should be a battery some where inside the laptop (your on your own to find it... take it out for a day, put it back in and go on your way... you may need to find a service manual and be very diligent if it is a laptop...

good luck...

also ophcrack does a decent job at finding admin passwords provided they are not to hard of passwords to crack... there was this other program i found once... it did a nice job of just clearing the passwords... it worked nice... i wish i knew the name of it...

If you are locked out of the default administrator account on xp, http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/pub0009/lpmarticle.asp?id=305 should help.

If you can get access to a program called Hiren, my school uses it to unlock the BIOS and the Administrator password on the computer. Just put it onto a CD and boot it up when you start the computer like you would normally do with a fresh install.

EDIT: It is currently v11.1, and it is free. Just look it up in Google.

The laptop all working fine but on a limited account, i want to open up the limited account and make it into administrator , but the whole account I can access is locked down, and all the ways I tried I cannot access anything. I got CMD without run so i tried doing it in MCC and that's all locked down. Tried changing administrator password in CMD also and access denied, so that didn't work.

Only thing i can thing of doing is reinstalling windows, but can't do that. BIOS is locked also.

The reason I am doing this, is because the system as spy-wear and the anti spyware isn't work and i cannot download new one due to having no access on the account.

Use the repair install of XP trick that I posted earlier. I had the same problem a few months ago and that trick works. Also, for the BIOS lock, you could pull the battery that is attached to the motherboard out. It will be a pain to get to because you have a laptop but it will clear the password on the BIOS and any settings in it. This is also the same as shorting the pins for the CMOS if you can do that easier. Some motherboards have the battery soldered to them so make sure to have the tools for that before you do anything... unless you like updating the time every time you turn it on.

Boot to your Windows 7 disc(if you have it) or press f8 to get to the startup repair option. You will need to find the command prompt option and when you do, you are half way there. Bring up the CMD window and type in "netuser administrator /active:yes X". Do that without the quotes and replace the 'X' with whatever you would like the password to be. Then reboot and you should now see a new Admin account. Load it up and go to the User Accounts section of control panel and remove the password for your original account. You will lose access to any encrypted files that you may have so keep that in mind. Once you have regained access to your account, just go to start and type in CMD. Right click on it and click Run as Administrator. Then, type "netuser administrator /active:no" without the quotes and that will hide the admin account once again.
