this is a spin off of http://lockergnome.net/questions/25269/are-you-male-or-female-my-guess-is-it-s-10-1-males so why is that that the tech industry is mostly male? i am going to school to become a computer engineer, thus i have taken many math science and engineering classes... i can have a class of 30 and I'm lucky of two... yes two are female... my math classes are more mixed maybe 2F for every 3M... and a lot of that is because of the math education program... so why do a lot of females become teachers? so why is technology a mostly male dominated field? |

There's been a lot written on the subject, including two very recent posts: the first, on *FastCompany.com* and this follow-up piece. I follow and am friends with a great many female geeks, some of whom self-identify as geeks and some of whom have what some might call "geeky" careers (astrophysicists, aeronautical and mechanical engineers, NASA flight controllers and so forth.) Many of them have had to work especially hard to prove themselves on their merits, particularly in areas where an "old boys club" still very much exists. Why do some excel and others opt for other roles? It's complicated is the simplest answer, and, yes, a bit of a cop-out but I don't have time to write a dissertation here. |
