Need help with external monitor??!!

I just bought a Benq 24" monitor for my macbook white. I bought the right cables, but why wont the mini display cable fit in perfect? It fits but doesn't go in all the way. the screen does not detect the mac, and the mac does not detect the screen. Need a good answer now!!!!
