I know that Windows Firewall in vista is half-cocked, even though it has Outbound Protection but its not turned on and if you want to turn it on you need to create new rules. I tried other free third-party firewall, they aren't bad some are just bad and some are good. What i find the good ones are really annoying. Is it better to have Third-Party firewall over the Windows Firewall?

Is it better a choice to have a Third-Party Firewall or Windows Firewall protecting your pc?

Well, if you're behind a router, don't worry about running a software firewall at all.

If you have to go software (with a direct connection to the internet) then go with a third-party firewall if you're a tweaker. If not, I find Window's own firewall to be proficient. Hope this helps!

What do you mean by "If you have to go software (with a direct connection to the interenet)?

I think he means if your computer is directly connected to a modem and doesn't have a router between it and the modem.

Yes, Pizzor2000, you're right. If you have no router between you and the internet, this is considered a direct connection to the internet. In that case you'd need software firewall protection.

Comodo firewall is really good. Or you can try Zonealarm.

I heard that Comodo Firewall is really good, but i haven't tried it. I wouldn't use Zonealarm, its not as good as they used to be, also uses a lot of memory.

One of my favorite gurus, Fred Langa, reports that he has been running Win Firewall and MSE, and no other AV, AM, FW, RK or HIPS for the last 6 months on several machines 24/7 and a couple of laptops that connected at many airports, cafes and wild WiFi hotspots... with NO problems... so far, I guess he meant to say. So I am trying it and so far, three weeks, no problems and NOT noisy at all! Never asks me anything, no popups or decisions to make. To get adjusted to it as far as your confidence is concerned, hang on to some of your favorite scanners and such and once a week run one or two of the online scanners and soon you will find that the history log is STILL blank! Your mileage may vary, as Fred says.....
