When reading the information on Crucial's site I noticed this:

Q: Do I have to install matching pairs? A: No. No, you can install modules one at a time, and you can mix different densities of modules in your computer. But if your computer supports dual-channel memory configurations, you should install in identical pairs (preferably in kits) for optimal performance. Q: Does my computer support dual-channel memory? A: No. Your system does not support dual channel.

Given this information, would it be more effective to have 6GB RAM or 8GB RAM. My iMac currently has 4GB (2x2GB). If I upgraded to 8GB I would get another 2x2GB making it 4x2GB.

The RAM would be installed on a 27" 2.8GHZ Quad Core i7 iMac Help greatly appreciated.

Get as much as you can afford. ;) That's my general advice for any kind of hardware upgrade.

As Chris just said if you can afford it get the best you can get now, or you will probably regret not buying it later.

I think that if you are going to upgrade, just go as far as you can, it's never going to be too much.
