This isn't at all helpful either, we know what the word free means, he was asking what the best option is.

Avast! Free Antivirus is the one I use and it clears out any viruses I've ever had, but I don't get them a lot. http://www.avast.com

well imo no free AV is worth the money... and that is saying some thing... because its free... and yes it does cost money in disk space, memory and processor... I would pay the money to go with Symantec/Norton...

The reason why I would not recommend a free one is because your not really that protected, I know a lot of people with disagree but security updates and virus updates come later, and they often times dont stand by there product. I feel if anything it gives a false sense of security.

However, I do run a Ubuntu Virtual Box - for that I use ClamAV... I know its Linux you shouldn't need an AV for it... but for the same reason its Linux... its easy to screw some thing up and easy for some one else to screw something up for you. So if some one does write one for Linux, at least I have some protection.

I will also say that the an AV does more then scan files, it watches what programs on your computer are doing in case one is not known, it can still watch its behavior. and the best I have seen to do this is Symantec...

so I would not recommend any free antivirus.

Avast free antivirus, I test AV software and by far is the best I tried. Another good one is Avira :) not as great as Avast though but is still cool.
