I want to download a program and I have to pick either 32 or 64

  1. From the Apple menu, choose About this Mac, then click More Info.
  2. In the Contents pane, select Software.
  3. If 64-bit Kernel and Extensions is set to Yes, you are running a 64-bit kernel.

Hope this helped. If you want to boot into 64-bit kernel, you can try holding down 6 and 4 at startup. Run through the procedure above to see whether it booted into 64-bit kernel correctly. I'm pretty sure both 32-bit and 64-bit versions will work if you're booting into the 64-bit kernel.

If you are running Snow Leopard then you need the 64 bit version. If you are running Leopard, you can choose either (but I think 32 bit would work better. I'm not sure, so don't take my word on 64 bit on Leopard).

Go to the System Profiler. Then under software their should be something that says " 64-bit Kernel and Extensions:". If you want to run in (Snow Leopard only) 64-bit mode without pressing 6+4 every time you boot up this video might help

quit simple if it has more than 4gb of system memory (ram + video ram) it got to be 64 bit
