Back in the day, it used to have a good impact on performance but now since most of the components responsible for your performance are now built into the CPU, the chipsets play a much smaller role in your overall system performance. if you look at benchmarks for cheap motherboards and compare them to super expensive ones, the performance difference is usually so small that you wont notice it with out a benchmark)

Varies from computer to computer, I just swapped my motherboard and initially downgraded the CPU for benchmarking reasons. The computer loads faster and opens applications quicker. I went from a Phenom II Quad @ 3.2Ghz down to an Athlon II x2 @ 2.8Ghz. Should be a rocket ship when I slot the Phenom II in.
