Windows 8 2014 Release|Hardocp.com

Microsoft’s Dutch subsidiary stated on a blog post that Windows 8 is about two years away from hitting the market. So that means to look forward to a 2014 or so release.

Windows 7 was released in October 2009, two and a half years after the Windows Vista went on sale for most customers. Microsoft officials, including CEO Steve Ballmer, had promised that after Vista's many delays that the company would never again go so long between Windows releases.

When do you think Windows 8 will be released? What new features would you like to see in the OS? Could it possibly be made better than Windows 7?

I just hope they come up with a better advertising strategy than "8 Seconds with Windows 8."

I don't plan on buying Windows at any point in the near future ($199.99 for the cheapest version just doesn't seem to cut it for me).

I hope it doesn't get rushed, and we end up with another ME or Vista...

Because Vista pretty much, failed, XP was still the main OS that people would use for about 8 years until Windows 7 came out. I believe that Win XP would still be fully around and known for a few years. If Windows 8 would come out in about 2012/2013 then I think that it would be a little too soon. Many people still use XP (including me) and haven't made themselves familiar with 7. By the time Win 8 comes out some are still using XP, some are newcomers to 7 and others are feeling comfy with it. That means that the people still left with XP would perhaps go over to 8, but the others that are using 7, probably not. The reason is that Windows 7 newcomers & non-techies wouldn't want to get their worlds turned upside down again. Others wouldn't consider $200 a price to spend on a new OS that's only like 3/4 years newer than the older version. That's why. I think that Microsoft should hold their horses a little while and improve Windows 8, and perhaps make it the new beginning of Microsoft. Rushing things isn't the solution. Although it doesn't go with Diablo - making a game for 10 years isn't great!

Half-Life 2 indeed released 6 years after it's first sequel, but it also was the new era for its series. Because it had a totally new and different engine, also the graphics were greatly improved.

It should be official now that Microsoft will release Windows 8 in a few years. Which is ridiculous, I think.

It sounds like 2013, because Microsoft releases a new OS every so 4 years...

It would be funny if they sold it for 88.88, but I can see it can be a sign for windows lucky in some locations because they believe they say 8 is lucky..

It won't be that long, no. "Windows 7 was released in October 2009, two and a half years after the Windows Vista went on sale for most customers."

From the way things look at this point, we'll see it hitting shelves in late 2011 or early 2012.

Kat I think the reason that they made Win 7 so fast was because Vista sucked. Windows 7 design looks pretty much like Vista's, but it performs better. Other things were already settled, only thing left to do was to improve the quality and performance. I also think that they shouldn't release 8 that soon. Read my answer to see why...

(Thumbs up to you, Kat!)

I really hope Microsoft doesn't go back to their 5 year release cycle plan and that's why I think Windows Vista was a failure because 5 years of development is hard to elegantly put into a product.

No idea. To be honest its not really needed. As a Mac user I don't need it but I do use Windows 7 from time to time and that seems to be ok for now... I think Microsoft just mentioned it as Apple started talking about their new OS. They are just a bit nervous. Thats all.

I would not think that we will see Windows 8 for a while yet because Windows XP was on the shelf for a long time but it worked vista was not on the shelf near as long because it did not work well for a lot of people. Windows 7 works so it will be on the shelf for a while yet.

I am thinking closer to 2014, Windows 7 was made so much sooner because Vista was questionable and since Windows 7 is stable and works very well there is no reason to rush out a new OS anytime too soon, we will still have people using Windows XP in 2014, which is almost like saying is still using Windows 95 today.

Edit - Based on new information I just read it does seem like it would be closer to 2013 if not sooner. 2012 seems a bit too fast for a new OS that costs as much as these do.
