Having used both worlds, I am appreciative of both environments. But I really can't understand apple's idea of blocking their OS to only Apple-Manufactured Computers. I'll bet a good majority of us here would Buy both the Windows OS and Mac OS, and then dual-boot(Maybe Triple-Boot with a Linux Distro). I know I'd certainly consider it. Think about this apple, charge $100-150 for the OS so you can install on any hardware you want, and make an extra $billion+/annually from the people who will buy the OS.

So, to make this a question, Would YOU buy the Mac OS Software if made available for any hardware brand?

then it would be possible to run on terrible hardware by default this would tarnish apples name as people would complain that OSX was crap because their machine was an utter piece of shit.

That is why I don't recommend bargain bin PCs. I only buy the quality ones.

but people will still buy them as it is cheaper to buy and install OSX than Windows as windows 7 is more than 100 dollars and snow leopard is only 29.this would lead to people installing it on these crap computers to cut costs.

True. A lot of people buy bargain bin PCs (most people don't know better). Personally, though I use Windows PCs, I buy more expensive, high-spec, high-quality machines.

me too but I prefer Linux as there are many lightweight but powerful distros.

popman: It already runs on almost any system currently. Look at the roots of MacOSX. FreeBSD runs on almost any system, as does Darwin. This could be easily done.

In many cases, the same hardware your Apple-branded PC contains can be purchased for a non-Apple-branded PC, at a lower cost. The fact that Apple have marked the price up doesn't necessarily mean the hardware is any better; It's the same hardware. They're selling you technical support. Microsoft can't provide a warrantee on the computer and the OS at the same time; Apple can, because they've factored the price of technical support into your costs. If something goes wrong with your non-Apple-branded PC, you have to troubleshoot before you call. You may have to call a vendor for a specific piece of hardware or Microsoft for the OS. If something goes wrong with your Apple-branded computer, you can simply call Apple.

Quality is value judgement. A non-electronically-savvy person may consider Apple-branded computers high value because the technical support makes issues almost painless to deal with, except in the case of ISPs who refuse to provide support for networks that contain only Apple systems (stupid, isn't it?). An electronically-savvy gamer may consider an Apple-branded computer low value, because for the same price they can get a second GPU for the same price if they hunt around and buy all of the components themselves. As a programmer, I find them a bit over the top and expensive. I'm happy to do the troubleshooting if something goes wrong. In many cases I resolve issues myself, without making a phone call. In the cases I do make a phone call, people are often as confused about the problem as I am and I end up submitting a bug report.

Very well put, Seb.

but the fully featured OS would be fairly heavy.and most consumers would not like to use any of the more pared back OS's.I can imagine them calling tech support saying the internet is not working I don't know why,but it might have something to do with my wi-fis my computer has an internet port that looks like a phone line will that do?
