Help! Hactivating Iphone 2g

A friend of mine recently acquired a friends old iphone 2g. He has been using it as an ipod touch basically. Since it was never updated, he couldn't download any apps. I offered to upgrade it for him. All went well-i plugged it into itunes, and upgraded to 3.0.1 i think, or something like that, However, since he never had a sim card in it, it not won't let me do anything - it needs a sim card. Is there any way that i can hactivate it so he can just use it like an ipod touch? thank you very much...
