There are three primary optical designs: refracting, reflecting, and catadioptric. Refracting telescopes use a lens to focus the image. Reflecting telescopes use one or more curved mirrors that reflects light to form an image. Catadioptric telescopes use a combination of lenses and mirrors to form an image. There are many different types of each design.
