Depends on the type of game. Mostly:

  • Unintrusive; minimal footprint, maximal gameplay area.
  • Key stats that are time-sensitive, i.e. hitpoints/mana, build resources, etc
  • Immediate threats, direction of incoming fire, radar, etc
  • Current goal or mission. If multiple, then the highest priority one.

I like a busy HUD, because I can keep track of it all and still see the game. I like to be informed. And if something important is happening one one thing, and I don't quite catch it, I'd like it to start flashing red. But that's just me.

For FPS games I only need to know how much ammo I have left and what my health is at. Games such as Battlefield Bad Company 2 has a very limited HUD but it makes game play even better. I don't care much about other things like a radar or anything. BFBC2 has a grenade indicator, which is helpful as well.
