Space ships seem to be able to travel all over the universe and not need to be fuelled up. Is there some intergalactic automobile association that we don't know about?

Because it would be boring to see a space ship refuel. ;-)

But like the other commenters said, there's usually an adventure behind each reason to refuel.

Science Fiction Vehicles did run low & out of fuel. I'm guessing engines of the future would be many times more efficient, ya think =0p...

  • Back to the Future's Time Machine (Gasoline, Nuclear, Electricity, Mr. Fusion)
  • Star Trek (Dilithium Crystals, Anti-Matter)
  • Salvage 1 (High Explosive Rocket Fuel)
  • Seven Days' Time Sphere (Element 115)
  • Iron Man (New Element very similar to Element 115)

Ununpentium (i /uːnuːnˈpɛntiəm/ oon-oon-PEN-tee-əm)[1] is the temporary name of a synthetic superheavy element in the periodic table that has the temporary symbol Uup and has the atomic number 115.

It is placed as the heaviest member of group 15 (VA) although a sufficiently stable isotope is not known at this time that would allow chemical experiments to confirm its position. It was first observed in 2003 and only about 30 atoms of ununpentium have been synthesized to date, with just 4 direct decays of the parent element having been detected. Four consecutive isotopes are currently known, 287-290Uup, with 289Uup having the longest measured half-life of ~220 ms, although the isotope 290Uup may well have an even longer half-life (only a single decay has been measured leading to poor accuracy).

well. Going from Star Trek, (What I know the most about) Voyager had to stop multiple times on their voyage home to replenish their fuel supplies. I can remember one episode where they were running out of Deuterium ( the matter that is mixed with anti-matter to make fuel)

Basically in the world of Star Trek, tiny amounts of matter destroying antimatter creates a lit of energy.

A lot more efficient than burning fossil fuels in pistons....

Well in almost all the Star Treks except for Deep Space Nice, they did have to at one point or other have to find dilithium crystals for the ship. although it was always a adventure, so in a way watching them trying to refuel was entertaining.

Yeah true, dilithium crystals aren't a very efficient fuel source.

Solar energy wouldn't really be a viable product, as you would always have to be close enough to a star to collect it's energy.

there are a few pretty realistic episodes of firefly there´s a hole episode named "out of gas" and every time serenity lands someone says "we gonna need a refeul" and in star wars you can see a lot of fihgters refueling all time.

Because the big oil companies have not figured out how to charge for the fuel

Because "the incidences of fuel running out" are not a part of the story or no-one listens to the story writer. :)
