So I just bought a refurbished pc from PC World about 2/3 weeks ago. It has never give me any bother until today. I switched it off last night, before i done this the PC was running fine. Today i switched it on logged in and waited a min then tried to click on start but nothing happened and the loading animation appeared beside the cursor then it said windows exploer stopped working then buttonmanager stopped working so i closed these i even tried look for a soloution still nothing i even restarted the pc and switched it off at the wall for 10 seconds rebooted it and same story. What on earth could this be? I mean it was running perfectly before i switched it off last night. :S Any help appreciated |

It does sound like its malware or rootkit, your best bet is reformatting and re-installing the OS, btw which OS are you running and what are the system specs? |

keep pressing F8 on startup, select 'Last Known Good Configuration' and hopefully it should start properly. |

There are a number of things that you can try.
From the sounds of it you're running Windows Vista. I also suffered a lot of problems with Windows Explorer not responding and then closing. These issues seem to have been resolved with Windows 7 since I haven't come across any issues at all. I recommend you follow the steps I have mentioned above and see if that solves the issue. I'd advise you to use Avast Antivirus to scan for virus's and then use a trial of TuneUp Utilities to clean your registry and remove errors. It also comes with many other tools that may help you diagnose the problems you're facing. If you are running Windows Vista I'd recommend you install ALL Windows updates, especially Service Pack 1 & 2, these service packs's solved my issues when I was running Vista. Best of luck. |

All good suggestions. One more to make would be to turn system restore off after doing a virus scan, then that way the virus can't return when you do a sysres. Run the A/V again and when all clean, turn sysres back on. You could also do a SFC /scannow. Just select Run from the start menu and type in sfc /scannow, this will scan your computer for errors and fix them. |

Try booting into a Linux live cd and see if that works. if it does then it is the installation or the hard drive that do not work. To test if it is the hard drive re install a new operating system on it. If that works then you're sorted |

In the future I suggest noting exact errors.
