When I hear "old" i think of old computer things, like floppy discs. Im 13 but when i was in Elementary my teachers yelled at me to use them. I ignored them and used the current flash drives. They yelled at me. Do you still use floppy disks???

Why should "chris", "lockergnome", "apple", and "mac" be tagged in this question?

... because this person is incapable of tagging correctly. I feel sorry for him. It doesn't take much intelligence to think of correct tags.

He may be new. Don't get onto their case just because they don't know how to tag. Even I make mistakes in tagging. All I am saying is don't be rude about it. :-)

@Jameel Alyyan: Who are you talking to? If you are talking to Seb, well....he was banned a few months back....

If you are talking to me I was just asking why as a way to correct the asker so that they didn't go and do it on other questions as well.

(Mar 25 '11 at 09:43) TheTechDude TheTechDude's gravatar image

OH he was banned? Do you know what for? Yes I was talking to Seb.

(Mar 25 '11 at 16:18) Jameel Alayyan Jameel%20Alayyan's gravatar image

He was banned because:

Permanently banned due to not following rules and poor attitude.

This is what it says on his profile page when you click on his name. That is as much detail as I am going to go into the subject.

We live in the world of internet and physical storage media (especially old ones like the floppy disk that do not provide a big space for data and are not reliable) tend to decrease because people find other ways that are slightly better to store their media and transfer them in no time . Of course I am talking about online services like Dropbox that provide some space , even without cost. So for example if i want to transfer a file , i have many ways that i can use but i want to use the fastest and my file may be big. These are the choices i have : i can burn the file in a cd or dvd but this way i am spending my money on physical media which will be useless after the transfer , i can use a floppy drive but the file may be too big and it is highly unlike to find a computer that uses a floppy disk drive , i can use a usb drive which is a good way but there is one way that is even better : Internet . I can use a free service like Dropbox ( at least providing 2 gb for free) and transfer my file without spending time, disk space and money on physical media that are not reliable and i am not going to use.

thank you for spending time to read my text .

any responses or comments on what i wrote are appreciated .

Exactly. I love dropbox. :-)

Dropbox does have its flaws - although its a great storage service and i especially like the folder syncing...

it doesn't work for some people because some organizations (read businesses and schools) block access to the dropbox website.

So its USB for me until further notice.

I have nearly 100 of them. They hold old files that have mostly been corrupted.

Yeah I used to have a ton of them. But the question is... WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THEM? lol. It's hard to throw them away because sometimes there are data on them that may be important but yet it's hard to actually pull out your old dusty computer, boot it up, put the floppy, plug in a USB device that may not even work, and copy them. Know what I mean?

(Mar 25 '11 at 03:56) Jameel Alayyan Jameel%20Alayyan's gravatar image

Keep the data in something else like an external hard drive or the like.

Then turn them floppies into some kind of abstract art with a little hot glue and duct tape...holy crap I think I might do just that, if I can find my old stash of floppies. o_o

other than that, I don't really use them

I have them. I need the for something when I am working on Windows XP such as network setup discs and password reset along with SATA driver and so on. I have a external USB floppy drive that I use when needed. I also have MS-DOS 5 and Windows 3.0 on floppies, never used them for anything. I only use floppies when it is absolutely necessary because Flash Drives are so much faster and hold more also. When I was in the fifth grade I tried to save a PowerPoint that I was making onto a Floppy and it didn't fit so i went out and spent about $25 on a 1 GB flash drive prices have dropped big time.

That is true. In Windows XP they require them sometimes. I usually just say screw it and reinstall the OS because why go through the hassle of dealing with a floppy when it probably is quicker to reinstall? right?

(Mar 25 '11 at 03:58) Jameel Alayyan Jameel%20Alayyan's gravatar image

@Jameel Alayyan: What are you talking about? When you install Windows XP on a computer that has a SATA hard drive you need to use a floppy to load the drivers during the install. What you just said made no sense.

Hell No. Outdated Technology is just pointless

Not always. Some would say the "optical drive" is outdated. Is that pointless too?

(Mar 25 '11 at 03:59) Jameel Alayyan Jameel%20Alayyan's gravatar image

@Jameel Alyyan: I haven't used my optical drive since I reinstalled my OS and then a few games. So that was 6 months ago.

(Mar 25 '11 at 09:44) TheTechDude TheTechDude's gravatar image

@Jameel, I see a big difference in a dated floppy drive to a current optical drive that is used about everyday.
