A smartphone is a phone with a certain operating system such as; windows mobile, android, symbian, iOS, RIM or something of the sort.

It is a phone that is meant to be more than a phone that is just a phone and send texts. It will often have integrated email apps, installable apps, and internet features. While most dumbphones have this too, smartphones are said to do these things many times better.

A Smartphone is a phone that can offer more advanced capabilities over a traditional phone such as apps and a HD camera. It also has PC-like functionality so it's like having a portable phone in some respects.

The actual definition of smartphone is a mobile that incorporates a PDA which is a palmtop computer used to store information such as addresses and telephone numbers, and for simple word processing and spreadsheeting. Though I would define a smartphone as a phone that can call and text but also be used for other types of media usage to make it a multimedia device.

Phones like the iPhone and blackberry's are are called this because the can handle other medias.
